SUMMARY:BOOK CLUB | NOVEMBER 24TH
DESCRIPTION:FRIENDS OF THE CHENEY LIBRARY BOOK CLUB\n\n\n\nNovember Book Pick: Lillian Boxfish Takes a Walk \n\n\n\nAuthor: Kathleen Rooney \n\n\n\nWhen: Tuesday\, November 24th at 6:30 pm \n\n\n\nWhere: Library Community Room at the Cheney Library \n\n\n\nThis event is open to all. Registration is not required. Please join us in discussing this month’s book pick. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBook Description by SCLD: \n\n\n\nInspired by Margaret Fishback\, poet and Macy’s ad-writing phenom of the 1930s\, Rooney imagines an extraordinary walk through the streets of New York City on the last night of 1984\, one that triggers a flood of memories for fictional ad woman Lillian Boxfish. The octogenarian muses on the changing urban landscape as she stops at favorite haunts: an intimate neighborhood bar that’s just installed a TV\, a restaurant where she’s dined every New Year’s Eve that’s about to change owners\, the famed Delmonico’s\, where she ended her marriage. Further stops include a changing lower Manhattan landscape where she meets a haunted Vietnam veteran and engages him in a “best last-line contest\, ” a detour to a hospital emergency room with a frightened woman about to have her first baby\, and a party where she’s both scorned and adored by a new generation of artists\, followed by a hilarious encounter with three muggers. Meanwhile\, Lillian carefully recounts her celebrated career in advertising\, her adored husband and son\, and her emotional breakdown. Elegantly written\, Rooney creates a glorious paean to a distant literary life and time-and an unabashed celebration of human connections that bridge the past and future. \n\n\n\nSource: SCLD website

SUMMARY:BOOK CLUB | JANUARY 26TH
DESCRIPTION:FRIENDS OF THE CHENEY LIBRARY BOOK CLUB\n\n\n\nJanuary Book Pick: Everyone Knows Your Mother Is a Witch \n\n\n\nAuthor: Rivka Galchen \n\n\n\nWhen: Tuesday\, January 26th at 6:30 pm \n\n\n\nWhere: Library Community Room at the Cheney Library \n\n\n\nThis event is open to all. Registration is not required. Please join us in discussing this month’s book pick. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBook Description by SCLD: \n\n\n\nThe story begins in 1618\, in the German duchy of Württemberg. Plague is spreading. The Thirty Years’ War has begun\, and fear and suspicion are in the air throughout the Holy Roman Empire. In the small town of Leonberg\, Katharina Kepler is accused of being a witch. \n\n\n\nKatharina is an illiterate widow\, known by her neighbors for her herbal remedies and the success of her children\, including her eldest\, Johannes\, who is the Imperial Mathematician and renowned author of the laws of planetary motion. It’s enough to make anyone jealous\, and Katharina has done herself no favors by being out and about and in everyone’s business. \n\n\n\nSo when the deranged and insipid Ursula Reinbold (or as Katharina calls her\, the Werewolf) accuses Katharina of offering her a bitter\, witchy drink that has made her ill\, Katharina is in trouble. Her scientist son must turn his attention from the music of the spheres to the job of defending his mother. Facing the threat of financial ruin\, torture\, and even execution\, Katharina tells her side of the story to her friend and next-door neighbor Simon\, a reclusive widower imperiled by his own secrets. \n\n\n\nDrawing on real historical documents but infused with the intensity of imagination\, sly humor\, and intellectual fire for which Rivka Galchen is known\, Everyone Knows Your Mother Is a Witch will both provoke and entertain. The story of how a community becomes implicated in collective aggression and hysterical fear is a tale for our time. Galchen’s bold new novel touchingly illuminates a society and a family undone by superstition\, the state\, and the mortal convulsions of history. \n\n\n\nSource: SCLD website

SUMMARY:BOOK CLUB | FEBRUARY 23RD
DESCRIPTION:FRIENDS OF THE CHENEY LIBRARY BOOK CLUB\n\n\n\nFebruary Book Pick: Empire of the Summer Moon \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAuthor: S.C. Gwynne \n\n\n\nWhen: Tuesday\, February 23rd at 6:30 pm \n\n\n\nWhere: Library Community Room at the Cheney Library \n\n\n\nThis event is open to all. Registration is not required. Please join us in discussing this month’s book pick. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBook Description by SCLD: \n\n\n\nEmpire of the Summer Moon spans two astonishing stories. The first traces the rise and fall of the Comanches\, the most powerful Indian tribe in American history. The second entails one of the most remarkable narratives ever to come out of the Old West: the epic saga of the pioneer woman Cynthia Ann Parker and her mixed-blood son Quanah\, who became the last and greatest chief of the Comanches. \n\n\n\nAlthough readers may be more familiar with the tribal names Apache and Sioux\, it was in fact the legendary fighting ability of the Comanches that determined when the American West opened up. Comanche boys became adept bareback riders by age six; full Comanche braves were considered the best horsemen who ever rode. They were so masterful at war and so skillful with their arrows and lances that they stopped the northern drive of colonial Spain from Mexico and halted the French expansion westward from Louisiana. White settlers arriving in Texas from the eastern United States were surprised to find the frontier being rolled backward by Comanches incensed by the invasion of their tribal lands. \n\n\n\nThe war with the Comanches lasted four decades\, in effect holding up the development of the new American nation. Gwynne’s exhilarating account delivers a sweeping narrative that encompasses Spanish colonialism\, the Civil War\, the destruction of the buffalo herds\, and the arrival of the railroads\, and the amazing story of Cynthia Ann Parker and her son Quanah–a historical feast for anyone interested in how the United States came into being. \n\n\n\nHailed by critics\, S. C. Gwynne’s account of these events is meticulously researched\, intellectually provocative\, and\, above all\, thrillingly told. Empire of the Summer Moon announces him as a major new writer of American history. \n\n\n\nSource: SCLD website

SUMMARY:BOOK CLUB | APRIL 27TH
DESCRIPTION:FRIENDS OF THE CHENEY LIBRARY BOOK CLUB\n\n\n\nApril Book Pick: North of Ordinary \n\n\n\nAuthor: Sue Aikens \n\n\n\nWhen: Tuesday\, April 27th at 6:30 pm \n\n\n\nWhere: Library Community Room at the Cheney Library \n\n\n\nThis event is open to all. Registration is not required. Please join us in discussing this month’s book pick. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBook Description by SCLD: \n\n\n\nWhen the wild strips everything away\, what’s left is who you are. \n\n\n\nIn the raw\, untamed wilds of Alaska–where the wind howls\, predators hunt\, and the sun disappears for months–only a rare few figure out how to survive. Sue Aikens\, the breakout star of National Geographic’s long-running TV show Life Below Zero\, is one of them. At her remote outpost 200 miles north of the Arctic Circle\, she weathers more than just brutal winters and hungry bears. Sue battles isolation\, injury\, and the ghosts of a turbulent past\, forging a life in a place most people wouldn’t last a day. \n\n\n\nLeft to fend for herself as a child\, Sue’s fight to survive began long before she ever set foot in Alaska. In North of Ordinary\, she tells the unforgettable story of abandonment\, grit\, and fierce independence–from navigating deadly storms and surviving a horrific bear attack to learning how to build a life\, a home\, and a sense of self where most would see only desolation. With her trademark wit\, fearless honesty\, and an indomitable spirit\, Sue proves that the toughest terrain isn’t always on the map. It’s the one we conquer inside. \n\n\n\nUnflinching and inspiring\, North of Ordinary is a memoir of resilience\, reinvention\, and the extraordinary power of choosing your own way through the world. \n\n\n\nSource: SCLD website
