SUMMARY:BOOK CLUB | SEPTEMBER 22ND
DESCRIPTION:FRIENDS OF THE CHENEY LIBRARY BOOK CLUB\n\n\n\nSeptember Book Pick: The White Cascade: The Great Northern Railway Disaster and America’s Deadliest Avalanche \n\n\n\nAuthor: Gary Krist \n\n\n\nWhen: Tuesday\, September 22nd at 6:30 pm \n\n\n\nWhere: Library Community Room at the Cheney Library \n\n\n\nThis event is open to all. Registration is not required. Please join us in discussing this month’s book pick. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBook Description by SCLD: \n\n\n\nIn February 1910\, a monstrous\, record-breaking blizzard hit the Northwest. Nowhere was the danger more terrifying than near a tiny town called Wellington\, perched high in the Cascade Mountains\, where a desperate situation evolved: two trainloads of cold\, hungry passengers and their crews found themselves marooned. For days\, an army of the Great Northern Railroad’s most dedicated men worked to rescue the trains\, but just when escape seemed possible\, the unthinkable occurred–a colossal avalanche tumbled down\, sweeping the trains over the steep slope and down the mountainside. Centered on the astonishing spectacle of our nation’s deadliest avalanche\, The White Cascade is the masterfully told story of a never-before-documented tragedy. \n\n\n\nSource: SCLD website

SUMMARY:BOOK CLUB | MAY 26TH
DESCRIPTION:FRIENDS OF THE CHENEY LIBRARY BOOK CLUB \n\n\n\nMay Book Pick: Rock Paper Scissors \n\n\n\nAuthor: Alice Feeney \n\n\n\nWhen: Tuesday\, May 26th at 6:30 pm \n\n\n\nWhere: Library Community Room at the Cheney Library \n\n\n\nThis event is open to all. Registration is not required. Please join us in discussing this month’s book pick. \n\n\n\nBook Description from Goodreads: \n\n\n\nThings have been wrong with Mr and Mrs Wright for a long time. When Adam and Amelia win a weekend away to Scotland\, it might be just what their marriage needs. Self-confessed workaholic and screenwriter Adam Wright has lived with face blindness his whole life. He can’t recognize friends or family\, or even his own wife.  \n\n\n\nEvery anniversary the couple exchange traditional gifts – paper\, cotton\, pottery\, tin – and each year Adam’s wife writes him a letter that she never lets him read. Until now. They both know this weekend will make or break their marriage\, but they didn’t randomly win this trip. One of them is lying\, and someone doesn’t want them to live happily ever after. \n\n\n\nTen years of marriage. Ten years of secrets. And an anniversary they will never forget.

SUMMARY:BOOK CLUB | APRIL 28TH
DESCRIPTION:FRIENDS OF THE CHENEY LIBRARY BOOK CLUB\n\n\n\nApril Book Pick: The Book of Lost Names \n\n\n\nAuthor: Kristin Harmel \n\n\n\nWhen: Tuesday\, April 28th at 6:30 pm \n\n\n\nWhere: Library Community Room at the Cheney Library \n\n\n\nThis event is open to all. Registration is not required. Please join us in discussing this month’s book pick. \n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\nBook Description by SCLD: \n\n\n\nEva Traube Abrams\, a semi-retired librarian in Florida\, is shelving books one morning when her eyes lock on a photograph in a magazine lying open nearby. She freezes; it’s an image of a book she hasn’t seen in sixty-five years–a book she recognizes as The Book of Lost Names. \n\n\n\nThe accompanying article discusses the looting of libraries by the Nazis across Europe during World War II–an experience Eva remembers well–and the search to reunite people with the texts taken from them so long ago. The book in the photograph\, an eighteenth-century religious text thought to have been taken from France in the waning days of the war\, is one of the most fascinating cases. Now housed in Berlin’s Zentral- und Landesbibliothek library\, it appears to contain some sort of code\, but researchers don’t know where it came from–or what the code means. Only Eva holds the answer–but will she have the strength to revisit old memories and help reunite those lost during the war? \n\n\n\nAs a graduate student in 1942\, Eva was forced to flee Paris after the arrest of her father\, a Polish Jew. Finding refuge in a small mountain town in the Free Zone\, she begins forging identity documents for Jewish children fleeing to neutral Switzerland. But erasing people comes with a price\, and along with a mysterious\, handsome forger named Rémy\, Eva decides she must find a way to preserve the real names of the children who are too young to remember who they really are. The records they keep in The Book of Lost Names will become even more vital when the resistance cell they work for is betrayed and Rémy disappears. \n\n\n\nAn engaging and evocative novel reminiscent of The Lost Girls of Paris and The Alice Network\, The Book of Lost Names is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the power of bravery and love in the face of evil. \n\n\n\nSource: https://catalog.scld.org/Record/a744091 \n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:BOOK CLUB | MARCH 24TH
DESCRIPTION:FRIENDS OF THE CHENEY LIBRARY BOOK CLUB\nMarch Book Pick: This Tender Land \nAuthor: William Kent Krueger \nWhen: Tuesday\, March 24th at 6:30 pm \nWhere: Library Community Room at the Cheney Library \nThis event is open to all. Registration is not required. Please join us in discussing this month’s book pick. \n  \nBook Description by SCLD: \nA magnificent novel about four orphans on a life-changing odyssey during the Great Depression\, from the bestselling author of Ordinary Grace. \n1932\, Minnesota–the Lincoln School is a pitiless place where hundreds of Native American children\, forcibly separated from their parents\, are sent to be educated. It is also home to an orphan named Odie O’Banion\, a lively boy whose exploits earn him the superintendent’s wrath. Forced to flee\, he and his brother Albert\, their best friend Mose\, and a brokenhearted little girl named Emmy steal away in a canoe\, heading for the mighty Mississippi and a place to call their own. \nOver the course of one unforgettable summer\, these four orphans will journey into the unknown and cross paths with others who are adrift\, from struggling farmers and traveling faith healers to displaced families and lost souls of all kinds. With the feel of a modern classic\, This Tender Land is an enthralling\, big-hearted epic that shows how the magnificent American landscape connects us all\, haunts our dreams\, and makes us whole. \nSource: https://catalog.scld.org/GroupedWork/177c8d73-82bf-f01b-ac41-798a1b98258f-eng/Home?searchId=17028581&recordIndex=1&page=1&searchSource=local&referred=resultIndex \n  \n

SUMMARY:BOOK CLUB | FEBRUARY 24TH
DESCRIPTION:FRIENDS OF THE CHENEY LIBRARY BOOK CLUB\nFebruary Book Pick: Night Draws Near \nAuthor: Anthony Shadid \nWhen: Tuesday\, February 24th at 6:30 pm\n\nWhere: Library Community Room at the Cheney Library\n\nThis event is open to all. Registration is not required. Please join us in discussing this month’s book pick.\n\n \n\nBook Description by SCLD:\n\nFrom the only journalist to win a Pulitzer Prize for his reporting from Iraq\, here is a riveting account of ordinary people caught between the struggles of nations.\n\nLike her country\, Karima-a widow with eight children-was caught between America and Saddam. It was March 2003 in proud but battered Baghdad. As night drew near\, she took her son to board a rickety bus to join Hussein’s army. “God protect you\,” she said\, handing him something she could not afford to give-the thirty-cent fare.\n\nThe Washington Post’s Anthony Shadid also went to war in Iraq although he was neither embedded with soldiers nor briefed by politicians. Because he is fluent in Arabic\, Shadid-an Arab American born and raised in Oklahoma-was able to disappear into the divided\, dangerous worlds of Iraq. Day by day\, as the American dream of freedom clashed with Arab notions of justice\, he pieced together the human story of ordinary Iraqis weathering the terrible dislocations and tragedies of war.\n\nThrough the lives of men and women\, Sunnis and Shiites\, American sympathizers and outraged young jihadists newly transformed into martyrs\, Shadid shows us the journey of defiant\, hopeful\, resilient Iraq. Moving from battle scenes to subdued streets enlivened only by the call to prayer\, Shadid uses the experiences of his characters to illustrate how Saddam’s downfall paved the way not only for democracy but also for an Islamic reawakening and jihad.\n\nNight Draws Near-as compelling as it is human-is an illuminating and poignant account from a repoter whose coverage has drawn international attention and acclaim.\n\nSource: https://catalog.scld.org/GroupedWork/00e8747c-8807-30cc-d6ef-dc65c2b78a97-eng/Home?searchId=15357271&recordIndex=1&page=1&searchSource=local&referred=resultIndex\n\n

SUMMARY:BOOK CLUB | JANUARY 27TH
DESCRIPTION:FRIENDS OF THE CHENEY LIBRARY BOOK CLUB\n  \nJanuary Book Pick: Remarkably Bright Creatures \nAuthor: Shelby Van Pelt \nWhen: Tuesday\, January 27th at 6:30 PM \nWhere: Library Community Room at the Cheney Library \nThis event is open to all. Registration is not required. Please join us in discussing this month’s book pick. \n  \n  \nBook Description by SCLD: \nFor fans of A Man Called Ove\, a charming\, witty and compulsively readable exploration of friendship\, reckoning\, and hope that traces a widow’s unlikely connection with a giant Pacific octopus. \nAfter Tova Sullivan’s husband died\, she began working the night shift at the Sowell Bay Aquarium\, mopping floors and tidying up. Keeping busy has always helped her cope\, which she’s been doing since her eighteen-year-old son\, Erik\, mysteriously vanished on a boat in Puget Sound over thirty years ago. Tova becomes acquainted with curmudgeonly Marcellus\, a giant Pacific octopus living at the aquarium. \nMarcellus knows more than anyone can imagine but wouldn’t dream of lifting one of his eight arms for his human captors–until he forms a remarkable friendship with Tova. Ever the detective\, Marcellus deduces what happened the night Tova’s son disappeared. And now Marcellus must use every trick his old invertebrate body can muster to unearth the truth for her before it’s too late. Shelby Van Pelt’s debut novel is a gentle reminder that sometimes taking a hard look at the past can help uncover a future that once felt impossible. \nSource: SCLD Website \n  \n

SUMMARY:BOOK CLUB | NOVEMBER 25TH
DESCRIPTION:FRIENDS OF THE CHENEY LIBRARY BOOK CLUB\nNovember Book Pick: When Harry Met Minnie \nAuthor: Martha Teichner \nWhen: Tuesday\, November 25th at 6:30 pm \nWhere: Library Community Room at the Cheney Library \nThis event is open to all. Registration is not required. Please join us in discussing this month’s book pick. \nBook Description by SCLD:  \nA memoir of love and loss\, of being in the right place at the right time\, and of the mysterious ways a beloved pet can bring people together\, from CBS Sunday Morning News correspondent and multi-Emmy-Award-winning Martha Teichner. A chance encounter with an old acquaintance changed Martha Teichner’s world. As fate would have it\, her friend knew someone who was dying of cancer\, from exposure to toxins after 9/11\, and desperate to find a home for her dog\, Harry. He was a Bull Terrier–the same breed as Martha’s dear Minnie. Would Martha consider giving Harry a safe\, loving new home? After Martha agrees to meet Harry and his owner Carol\, what begins as a transaction involving a dog becomes a deep and meaningful friendship between two women with complicated lives and a love of Bull Terriers in common. Through the heartbreak and grief of Carol’s illness\, the bond that develops changed Martha’s life\, Carol’s life\, Minnie’s life\, Harry’s life. Martha considers the ways our stories are shaped by the people we meet\, and the profound love we can find by opening our hearts to unexpected encounters. \nSource: SCLD website \n
