Friends of the Cheney Library played a significant role in the creation of the Cheney Library. It was founded circa 1966 by a group of volunteers and was originally known by the unofficial name “the kitchen cabinet.” In 1966, Joan Tracy, a member, and other supporters circulated a petition for the City of Cheney to have its own public library. By September of 1966 the measure passed and Cheney Library began its operations out of a small storefront location on First Street. In 1967 the Cheney Library became part of the Spokane County Libraries. In 1983 The Friends once again put on their thinking caps and gathered their resources to increase the library’s footprint. They began to look for a larger space, and in 1986 a levy received 80 percent approval to build a new library. The library you love and visit today is the library that was built in 1988 through the volunteer efforts of The Friends and of the support of the community in Cheney.
Then and now the Friends of the Cheney Library volunteer their time to do things the library is unable to do. The group purchases books for reading groups, sponsors events in the library, and holds several used book sales throughout the year.

Friends of the Cheney Library is a registered 501(c)3 nonprofit.
